Who should take the Canadian Firearms Safety Course (CFSC)?

The course is suitable for first-time firearm owners, hunters, recreational target shooters, collectors, security professionals, and anyone who wishes to safely and legally own or acquire non-restricted firearms in Canada.Anyone applying for their first Canadian Possession and Acquisition Licence (PAL) for non-restricted firearms must successfully complete the Canadian Firearms Safety Course (CFSC). Since June 2015, first-time applicants can no longer challenge the examinations based on previous firearms knowledge or experience. Attendance at the full course and successful completion of both the written and practical examinations are mandatory requirements before applying for a PAL.

What is a Possession and Acquisition Licence (PAL)?

A Possession and Acquisition Licence (PAL) is the licence issued by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) that allows an individual to legally possess and acquire firearms and ammunition in Canada. Successfully completing the Canadian Firearms Safety Course is one of the requirements for obtaining a PAL.

What is the difference between the CFSC and the CRFSC?

The Canadian Firearms Safety Course (CFSC) is required for individuals applying for a PAL for non-restricted firearms, such as most ordinary rifles and shotguns. The Canadian Restricted Firearms Safety Course (CRFSC) is an additional course required for individuals who wish to acquire restricted firearms. Students who intend to obtain restricted firearm privileges must successfully complete both courses.If you are eligible and have the time, we generally recommend completing both the CFSC and CRFSC at the same time. Even if you do not currently intend to acquire restricted firearms, completing both courses now provides greater flexibility for the future. Many students later decide to participate in target shooting, competitive shooting, or collect restricted firearms, and having already completed the CRFSC means they will not need to return to take an additional course later potentially saving them time and money.

If you only intend to apply for a PAL for non-restricted firearms, you only need to complete the Canadian Firearms Safety Course (CFSC). If you wish to obtain restricted firearm privileges, you must successfully complete both the CFSC and the Canadian Restricted Firearms Safety Course (CRFSC).If you are considering a career where firearms training is a condition of employment, such as becoming a Canada Border Services Officer (CBSA), you should complete both the CFSC and CRFSC. CBSA applicants are required to successfully complete both courses before beginning firearms training at the CBSA College in Rigaud. Even if you are undecided, many students choose to complete both courses at the same time. Doing so provides greater flexibility for future recreational shooting, competitive shooting, collecting, and employment opportunities, while avoiding the need to return for an additional course later.

Do I need any previous firearms experience?

No. The course is designed for individuals with little or no previous firearms experience, as well as those wishing to improve their knowledge of firearm safety and Canadian firearms legislation. Our instructors guide students through each step of the course in a safe, professional, and supportive learning environment.

How old do I have to be to take the course?

Anyone 12 years of age or older may take the Canadian Firearms Safety Course (CFSC) and complete both the written and practical examinations. Individuals who successfully complete the course and are between 12 and 17 years of age may apply for a Minor's Licence, which allows them to borrow and use non-restricted firearms for approved purposes such as hunting, target shooting, instruction, or organized competitions. A Minor's Licence does not permit the purchase or ownership of firearms and requires the written consent of a parent or legal guardian as part of the application process. Children under the age of 12 may attend the course for educational purposes only. They are not eligible to write the examinations unless they qualify under the limited "sustenance hunter" exception provided under the Firearms Act. Can non-residents take the course?

Yes. Non-residents may attend the Canadian Firearms Safety Course. Successfully completing the course does not automatically make someone eligible for a Canadian firearms licence. Eligibility for licensing is determined by the RCMP Canadian Firearms Program and applicable Canadian legislation.For non-residents who are eligible to obtain a Canadian PAL and who regularly bring non-restricted firearms into Canada, obtaining a PAL may provide additional convenience. Instead of completing a Non-Resident Firearm Declaration and paying the applicable confirmation fee each time it is required, licensed individuals generally need only present their valid PAL and declare their firearms to the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) when entering Canada. Is the course taught in English?

Yes. All instruction, examinations, and course materials are provided in English (exams can be provided in French if advance notice is provided). Students should have a sufficient understanding of spoken and written English to fully participate in the course and successfully complete both the written and practical examinations.

Are translators permitted during examinations?

No. The Canadian Firearms Program does not permit translators or interpreters during the examinations. Students must be able to complete both the written and practical examinations independently.

What is included in the course fee?

Your course fee includes professional classroom instruction, all required examinations, use of training firearms and equipment during the course, and the official Canadian Firearms Safety Course student manual in electronic format. Paper Manuals are avilable for $21 including HST and can be purchased on the day.

What payment methods do you accept?

Online payment is required at the time of registration. We do not accept payment by cash, cheque, e-Transfer, or any other payment method.

Question 12

Can I transfer my registration to another person?

Accepted Answer

Yes. If you are unable to attend your scheduled course, your registration may be transferred to another person before the course begins. Please contact us as early as possible so we can assist with the transfer.

Is the examination difficult?

Most students successfully complete the examinations. The key to success is reading the Student Handbook before attending the course, paying attention during instruction, and actively participating in the practical exercises. No previous firearms experience is required.
