What is a Firearms License?
A Firearms Licence is a licence issued by the Government that allows you to possess firearms, acquire firearms and buy ammunition. There are two types: "Possession Only" and "Possession and Acquisition"
When do I need a Firearms Licence?
As of January 1st, 2001 any person in possession of a firearm MUST have a Firearms Licence.
Can I still get a "Possession Only" Licence?
"NO" A possession Only Licence was only available before January 1st 2001, now you can only get a "Possession and Acquisition" Licence.
Where do I get a licence?
A licence is obtained from the Federal Government. Application forms can be obtained from Firearms Training and Education Service of Niagara or contacting The Canadian Firearms Center at 1-800-734-4000 or Canadian Firearms Center.
Do I have to take a course or test for these licences?
"YES" The test is mandatory but the course is optional with some restrictions. Persons 17 years and younger and persons that have had a firearms probation order, must take the course.
Where can I take the test?
Firearms Training and Education Services of Niagara is one place where you can take both course and test. For further choices check with the Canadian Firearms Center at 1-800-734-4000 or Canadian Firearms Center.
When must I register my firearms?
The deadline for registration of both "Non Restricted and Restricted Firearms" was January 1st 2003.
Is there a fee to register my firearms?
There is a $18.00 fee for all your "Non Restricted Firearms" if registered at one time. There is no fee for re-registering "Restricted Firearms". You can also register firearms "ONLINE", which can be done at Canadian Firearms Center.
